In these days of folk making their name in TV contests, we'd be tempted to call this one Chop Idol idol, an object, frequently an image, which is worshiped as a deity. Idols are usually found in human or animal form and may be treated as though alive; they are fed, bathed, anointed, crowned, and sometimes even provided with a consort. , but BBC3 are taking things a tad more seriously.

Unlike other talent shows, these finalists haven't set out to be famous, and they don't want to be celebrities, but they are all striving to be the best at what they do.

Presented by George (wait for it) Lamb, the series of four standalone programmes will also crown the Young Mechanic Of The Year, Young Hairdresser Of The Year and Young Chef Of The Year, highlighting the true star of each profession.

Hundreds of 16 to 24-year-old butchers, mechanics, hairdressers and chefs from across the country took part in a rigorous audition audition /au·di·tion/ (aw-dish´un) hearing.

Tonight's judges are Justin Preston, owner of Allens of Mayfair, the oldest British butcher to operate on its original site, and butcher David Lishman, from Lishmans in Yorkshire, one of the bestknown names in the business.

With rigorous challenges, a grilling (ahem) from the judges and elimination all to overcome, the last one standing will truly be able to claim the title of Butcher Of The Year.
