CareScience Announces That Its Participation in the 100,000 Lives Campaign Contributed to the Calculation of an Estimated 122,300 Lives Saved.

PHILADELPHIA -- CareScience, a division of Quovadx, Inc. (Nasdaq: QVDX) providing care management, clinical analysis and clinical quality improvement solutions, announced today that its participation in the 100,000 Lives Campaign in providing data and analysis support, and in its role as an official data intermediary partner, contributed to the calculation of an estimated 122,300 number of lives saved in this unprecedented national initiative. The landmark 18-month Campaign was initiated by the nonprofit Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI IHI Institute for Healthcare Improvement (Boston, MA, USA)

More than 3,000 hospitals have joined the Campaign - representing an estimated 75 percent of U.S. hospital beds. "We are proud to have played a role in the success announced today by Dr. Berwick, and applaud the work of both IHI and our many hospital customers, whose passionate participation resulted in this success," said Thomas Zajac, president of CareScience and executive vice president for Quovadx. "We are committed to partnering with our customers and supporting IHI in this continuing effort. Leveraging our data analysis, risk assessment and process improvement solutions and expertise, our customers continue to implement and measure the impact of the campaign's initiatives, resulting in better clinical care processes and saved lives."

"When we decided to launch the Campaign, we didn't know if hospitals could take on another challenge," said Dr. Berwick. "But they have risen to this challenge impressively. The participating hospitals have not only prevented an estimated 122,300 unnecessary deaths, but they've also proven that it's possible for the healthcare community to come together voluntarily to rapidly make significant changes in patient care. I have never before witnessed such widespread collaboration and commitment on the part of healthcare leaders and front-line staff to moving the system giant steps forward."

Hospitals participating in the Campaign agreed to implement one or more of the following six quality improvement changes:

As an official data intermediary partner, CareScience supported the national aggregate case-mix data and analysis to support the calculation of the "lives saved" data.

"At Quovadx, we feel strongly that the 100,000 Lives Campaign has played an important role in raising the collective consciousness of quality of care, and has helped to focus resources on quality initiatives and incentives," added Harvey A. Wagner, president and chief executive officer, Quovadx. "We are pleased to support our customers and the healthcare industry to improve patient care and allow them to achieve financial and clinical success."
