Care for gay seniors.

Gay and lesbian seniors are not only getting their own facilities to help them through retirement, they're getting a piece of the tax-dollar pie too.

In August the first federally funded day care center intended for gay and lesbian senior will open in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. With $200,000 in annual funding from the Broward County Agency on Aging, including money provided under the Older Americans Act, the center will offer day-care services for 20 to 30 gay seniors on weekdays. The center's facilitators said it will provide much needed support for a gay population in Broward that is getting older and frailer and lacks the support of its straight counterpart. "They are not likely to have the same family structure to care for them," said James Lopresti, who works for Sunserve, the social services agency that will run the center.

Located in a Metropolitan Community Church, the center will also be eligible to receive funds through President Bush's faith-based initiative.
