Cardinal Technologies Embraces New 56 Kbps Modem Speeds; Cardinal to offer customers value-priced modems at the highest speeds available.

LANCASTER, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 23, 1996--Cardinal Technologies today announced it will be among the first manufacturers to offer products based on a new modem technology that will enable Internet connection speeds at 56,000 bits per second, nearly double the current speed rates for current analog modems A common device that converts the computer's digital pulses to tones that can be carried over analog telephone lines. See modem. . Rockwell Semiconductor Systems, Cardinal's technology partner, recently announced it is developing a new modem technology enabling this substantial performance improvement.

"Cardinal has continually adopted the latest Rockwell chip technologies to give our customers the fastest connection speeds available and the 56,000 bits per second speed will be no exception," said James A Jonez, director of product marketing for Cardinal Technologies. "During the last six months we've given customers the latest 33.6 Kbps analog modem speeds and the lowest priced 128 Kbps ISDN adapter See ISDN terminal adapter.  on the market. Whenever new modem speeds have emerged, Cardinal has been the first to offer the latest technology with the best price and performance available."

Cardinal has recently worked with Rockwell to deliver the first 33.6 Kbps modem on the market that combines data, fax, voicemail and speakerphone capabilities using Rockwell's single chip technology. Cardinal was the first retail modem manufacturer to ship products offering Rockwell's AudioSpan technology, enabling users to exchange data and voice simultaneously to enhance the users computing experience with interactive gaming and collaborative computing.

The majority of ISDN modems on the market today range in price from $300-800. In July, Cardinal was the first manufacturer to begin shipping to the retail channel a $199 ISDN terminal adapter A device that adapts a computer to a digital ISDN line. Like a modem, it plugs into the serial port of the computer or into an expansion slot. The new 56 Kbps technology utilizes standard analog telephone lines already in place to most businesses and homes. The technology provides about twice the access speed for serious Internet users connected to Internet Service Providers Internet service provider (ISP)

The new technology is expected to become an industry standard making it especially attractive to Cardinal's customer base including small businesses, home offices and individual users. Over time, 56 Kbps connections will become the minimum level expectation for all users connecting to the Internet.
