Card invites a cynical response; VOICE OF THE NORTH.WITHOUT sounding churlish churl·ish adj. 1. Of, like, or befitting a churl; boorish or vulgar. 2. Having a bad disposition; surly: "as valiant as the lion, churlish as the bear" Shakespeare. , I wonder what prompted Royal Mail to send such a nice Christmas card to all its customers this year? Perhaps the fact that Royal Mail management has promoted a confrontational position with its hitherto loyal staff has something or everything to do with it! Nevertheless the gesture is accepted in the spirit it is offered. And I hope the post workers are duly paid for the four days holiday over the Christmas period (ie December 25 to 28 inclusive as detailed on the card). The 40,000 temporary workers employed during the dispute no doubt also received a Christmas card. D MITCHELL Mitchell, city (1990 pop. 13,798), seat of Davison co., SE S.Dak.; inc. 1881.
