Carbon coating offers wear resistance of glass. (Keeping up with Auxiliaries).

A new thin-film carbon coating process for plastics is said to offer an unprecedented combination of glass-like wear resistance and optical clarity. Diamonex Diamondshield is the latest addition to the Diamond-like Carbon (DLC (1) (Data Link Control) See data link and OSI.

With its high hardness and flexibility Diamondshield is reportedly more than 10 times as abrasion-resistant as conventional hard coatings for plastics. The coating can be applied to polycarbonate A category of plastic materials used to make a myriad of products, including CDs and CD-ROMs.  and acrylic. It boasts hardness 10 times that of plastic substrates, elongation of 1.5% to 2%, refractive index of 1.5, and hydrophobic properties. Diamondshield resists solvents and most acids and bases.
