Specialty carbon blacks are used in a number of markets to impart UV protection, color and conductivity. Black Pearls 4350 and Black Pearls 4750 are two high-purity furnace blacks that have been specially developed to comply with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) standards for materials used to color polymers for indirect contact with food. These grades are produced using state-of-the-art production systems with strict process controls to consistently meet FDA limits of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and benzo(a)pyrene. Carbon blacks directly impact the color, odor, weatherability and long-lasting mechanical strength of pipes for potable water and gas distribution, according to the company. P-type blacks, including Elftex P 100, are recommended for these applications. For electrostatic discharge (ESD) applications, Vulcan XC72, Vulcan XC605 and Vulcan XC305 are being promoted. (Cabot)
