Caravan song wins Mair ballad prize.

 Tomos Ifans was celebrating in her caravan on the sprawling Eisteddfod eisteddfod (īstĕth`vəd, –vôd) [Welsh,=session], Welsh competitive festival. Contests traditionally are held in all the arts and crafts, with special emphasis on music and poetry.  camp site after winning the ballad competition - with a song about a caravan.

She said: "It's the first time I've competed at the Eisteddfod: I did it in response to an appeal for more to compete on the old ballad competition in memory of Elfed Lewis who did so much to keep the art alive."

Mair, from Dinas Mawddwy Dinas Mawddwy is a village in North Wales just to the side of the A470 so that most visitors pass the village by. The village marks the junction of the unclassified road to Llanuwchllyn which climbs up through the mountains to cross Bwlch y Groes at its highest point, the highest , had to write the ballad before the end of June.

"It has to be witty and topical but the funny thing is that when I wrote it I didn't have a space on the caravan site. I was going to be in a tent until I got a cancellation.

"The prize (pounds 75) will come in useful to pay the site fees," she added.

Mair, who is well known in acting circles, is having a busy Eisteddfod.

She rushed from the stage yesterday after her ballad victory to the Literary Pavilion to give a performance of Angharad Tomos' Dan Glo (Locked up)
