Car plate checks to stop thefts.WARWICKSHIRE police Warwickshire Police is the Home Office police force responsible for policing Warwickshire in England. It was known as Warwickshire Constabulary until 2001. It is the second smallest territorial police force in the United Kingdom after the City of London Police, with only are targeting motorists who drive off without paying for fuel at petrol stations using automatic number plate recognition Automatic number plate recognition (ANPR; see also other names below) is a mass surveillance method that uses optical character recognition on images to read the licence plates on (ANPR ANPR Automatic Number Plate Recognition ANPR Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking ANPR Association of National Park Rangers ). It is part of the force's Operation Crunch, which is tackling vehicle crime and burglaries. Officers will be using mobile ANPR equipment to monitor motorists at petrol stations which are known to have problems with "bilkings" - people who drive off without paying for fuel. Garages will be supplied with warning signs showing that mobile ANPR operations are taking place. Det Sgt Martyn Stephens said: "Placing ANPR on forecourts we will be able to identify those offenders who are using their vehicles to commit crime and gives us a greater chance of catching criminals." |
