LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 7, 2001

New CaptIO High Availability Also called "RAS" (reliability, availability, serviceability) or "fault resilient," it refers to a multiprocessing system that can quickly recover from a failure. There may be a minute or two of downtime while one system switches over to another, but processing will continue.  Module Boosts Network Uptime by

Malicious DoS Assaults

Captus Networks, the world leader in protecting against Denial of Service A condition in which a system can no longer respond to normal requests. See denial of service attack.  (DoS) attacks, today announced a High Availability feature to enable continued uptime of the company's family of CaptIO(TM) network security devices in the event of the failure of a device or connectivity to a network. The new CaptIO High Availability module uses a redundant architecture of paired CaptIO devices to provide automatic failover to a second, standby CaptIO device if the primary device becomes unavailable. With this capability, the CaptIO family can support the high network availability requirements of data centers and network service providers.

"Today, network uptime requires more than just ensuring that the diverse elements of a network -- servers, routers, communication links, databases and applications, etc. -- work well individually and together. Denial of Service attacks An assault on a network that floods it with so many additional requests that regular traffic is either slowed or completely interrupted. Unlike a virus or worm, which can cause severe damage to databases, a denial of service attack interrupts network service for some period.  represent a new and extremely serious threat to uptime. In fact, many companies and service providers are under frequent assault. Accordingly, an e-business's defense against DoS attacks must itself ensure a high level of uptime," said Richard G. Helgeson, CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  and president of Captus Networks. "The CaptIO High Availability configuration delivers this mission-critical level of security by minimizing the risk of network downtime due to a security device failure."

DoS and DDoS Attack Protection

Unique in the network security device marketplace, the family of CaptIO network security devices can identify and immediately stop Denial of Service (DoS) and Distributed DoS (DDoS) attacks that originate from outside or inside a network, without disrupting legitimate traffic. The CaptIO device can be ordered in a variety of space-saving, 1U rack-mountable configurations with exceptional port density to meet a variety of security needs in the data center. Combinations of Fast Ethernet An earlier name for 100Mbps Ethernet. See 100Base-T.

(networking) Fast Ethernet - A version of Ethernet developed in the 1990s(?) which can carry 100 Mbps compared with standard Ethernet's 10 Mbps. It requires upgraded network cards and hubs.
and Gigabit Ethernet An Ethernet standard that transmits at 1 Gbps. Used mostly to connect high-end workstations and servers as well as for network backbones, Gigabit Ethernet transmits full duplex from point to point using switches and half duplex in a shared environment (CSMA/CD) using a hub.  interfaces are available to integrate easily into existing network topologies.

Dual Redundant Architecture

Captus Networks' High Availability architecture consists of two CaptIO devices with redundant connections. Each CaptIO device uses two non-dedicated physical Ethernet interfaces on two different network segments to provide link redundancy. The two CaptIO devices are configured so that one is the "active" security device and the other is in "hot standby A hardware device that is connected to the computer or computer complex and remains powered on. It is ready to take over immediately if the primary unit fails. A hot standby may refer to a complete computer system; for example, a standby server, or a component in a computer such as a " mode backing up the active device. During normal operation, configuration and resource management information is synchronized between the active and standby devices via the redundant communication channels. The active device generates a non-obtrusive "heartbeat" that is continuously monitored by the standby device. Data encryption algorithms are used to provide secure communications between the devices.

In the event of a hardware or software failure on the active CaptIO device, the standby device automatically takes over the network security functions of the active device. The failed device can be removed from the network and replaced with another CaptIO device. The newly replaced CaptIO device will become the new standby device for the operating network.

Availability

The CaptIO High Availability module is available immediately. The High Availability architecture is fully supported by both the CaptIO and CaptIO-G network security devices.
