In 1675 during King Philip's War King Philip's War, 1675–76, the most devastating war between the colonists and the Native Americans in New England. The war is named for King Philip, the son of Massasoit and chief of the Wampanoag. His Wampanoag name was Metacom, Metacomet, or Pometacom. , a group of Narragansett Indians attacked Lancaster, Massachusetts Lancaster is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, in the United States. Incorporated in 1653, Lancaster is the oldest town in Worcester County. As of the 2000 census, the town population was 7,380. , killing most of the colonists but taking a few hostages. Mary Rowlandson, wife of the town's pastor, was captured along with several of her children. Her six-year-old daughter died of her wounds and her other children were scattered about with various other groups of native "hell hounds." Though wounded herself, Mary survived for months with her captors and was finally ransomed by her husband for 20 pounds.

Naturally enough her attitude toward the Indians is biased and she complains continually about her condition.
