are among those taking part in a fundraising trek in the Brecon Beacons The Brecon Beacons (Welsh: Bannau Brycheiniog) is a mountain range located in the south-east of Wales. It forms the central section of the Brecon Beacons National Park (Parc Cenedlaethol Bannau Brycheiniog  next month and the public are being urged to join them on their Pen y Fan hike.

The trek is part of the training for the Brains SA Captains Climb, when 15 Welsh rugby captains will be taking on Kilimanjaro, aiming to raise pounds 1m for the Velindre Hospital Stepping Stones appeal to improve the treatment of lung cancer lung cancer, cancer that originates in the tissues of the lungs. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the United States in both men and women. Like other cancers, lung cancer occurs after repeated insults to the genetic material of the cell. .

The mountain in Tanzania is the highest in Africa at 19,000 feet and the players' assault on the peak is planned for September next year.

The climbers will include former Welsh stars such as Scott Gibbs, Scott Quinnell, Paul Thorburn, Ieuan Evans and Jonathan Davies.

Members of the public who can raise at least pounds 10,000 each will also be able to take part.

The walk next month in the Brecon Beacons is the first of many organised before the Kilimanjaro venture and is headed by Cardiff Blues ace Martyn Williams, who is also the patron of the Velindre Cancer Centre in Whitchurch, Cardiff.

He said: "This walk up Pen y Fan will be the first of many such walks and I want the Welsh public to support us, meet the rugby players, enjoy the views and raise money for Velindre Hospital."

The inspiration for the walk was Huw Evans, the Wales team sports photographer, whose wife Sue was diagnosed with lung cancer last November.

He said: "Lung cancer is not a very well funded area of research because people think it's brought on by smoking. When Sue was diagnosed, it brought home to us that it is not a smoking-related disease and that the prognosis for lung cancer patients is not good. We want to be able to turn that around. Hopefully we will be able to say we found a cure, and it was in Cardiff."

Dr Jason Lester, head of lung cancer research at Velindre Hospital, said: "Although lung cancer is the most common form of cancer death in Wales, research has been relatively poorly supported compared to other high profile forms of cancer. The money raised will help us fund local research projects, provide grants to doctors and nurses and allow us to purchase equipment to ensure we provide the best possible care for cancer patients in Wales."
