THE past week has been both disappointing and pleasing for Fleetwood Hesketh captain Gary Wells.

Disappointing because the Sea Cop club has finally taken the decision to cancel the arrangement by which West Indian West In·dies

spinner Mahendra Nagamootoo Mahendra Veeren Nagamootoo (born October 9, 1975 in Berbice, Guyana) is a West Indian cricketer of Indo-Guyanese ethnicity. Mahendra Nagamootoo is a bits-and-pieces man who admitted, after scoring 68 at Sydney in his second Test in 2000-01, that batting comes easier to him than the  would be playing for them this summer; but pleasing because the seven days also included a 99-run victory over their keenest rivals, Southport & Birkdale.

"That was our most satisfying result of the season," said Wells.

"However, I think the difference between the sides was the quality of the professional. We brought in leg-spinner Daryn Smit, who rips it a long way, and he was a perfect complement to our off-spinner, Andy Davies." Smit, who plays for the South African first-class side Dolphins in the winter, and Davies, whom his captain regards as the best off-spinner in the Business Assistance Liverpool Competition, shared nine wickets as S& B's batsmen struggled to cope on a Trafalgar Road turner. Wells hopes the derby win will mark the start of a consistent run for his seventh-placed side..

He said: "We've had a decent start without achieving all we'd hoped for. It's been disjointed because of the uncertainty over the professional.

"We've had that issue hanging over our heads." Negotiations over the latest delay in Nagamootoo's arrival in England ended with the club terminating its association with the Guyanan, and medium-pacer Faisal

In the absence of a regular pro, Wells has been grateful for the contributions of the club's amateurs.

"Neil Rimmer's batted exceptionally well and Derek Sykes has given him good support," he said..

"We've had good, consistent bowling, especially from Aaron Halsall, but overall the batting hasn't matched it.

Nevertheless, we've won three out of eight and I'll take that given the way we've played."
