Captain Downes heads to the Pole.


AN ARMY captain from Coventry will set off for the North Pole North Pole, northern end of the earth's axis, lat. 90°N. It is distinguished from the north magnetic pole. U.S. explorer Robert E. Peary is traditionally credited as being the first to reach (1909) the North Pole. In 1926, Richard E.  tomorrow to raise pounds 50,000 for the Breast Cancer Campaign Breast Cancer Campaign is the only charity that specialises in funding independent breast cancer research throughout the UK. It aims to find the cure for breast cancer by funding research which looks at improving diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, better understanding how it  appeal.

John-Paul Downes, who grew up in the city, will leave for the expedition as part of the international Polar Race The Polar Race is a biennial race from Resolute, Nunavut in northern Canada to the Magnetic North Pole. Teams of two, three or four walk/ski 350 miles pulling their food and equipment on sleds. .

He will complete the challenge with his friend Nabs Al-Busaidi from Oman, who will be the first Arab to ever trek to the North Pole.

The trip will require extreme stamina and determination as teams race to complete the 350- mile journey over sea, ice and Arctic islands in - 40 degree conditions.

It will not be his first endurance challenge as John-Paul has completed others in the past, including expeditions to Argentina, Peru, Bolivia and Tanzania.

But trekking to the North Pole is the ultimate test he will endure in memory of his close aunt who died of breast cancer four years ago.
