How excited you are about Torchwood's return for an epic five-night run depends on a few things. How big a sci-fi geek you are and how much more you can take of all-singing, all dancing, all over the TV John Barrowman.

The Glasgow boy made good - thanks in part to growing up in America and keeping his Weegie accent under wraps - returns as intergalactic alien hunter Captain Jack Harkness in the Doctor Who offshoot show - and dominates the entire week on BBC1.

Tonight's episode sees an ordinary day become one of terror as every single child in the world stops in their tracks and stares blankly ahead. Things get worse when a message is sent to all the governments of the world stating: "We are coming".

As the week unfolds, Torchwood is forced underground, members of the team are hunted down and events escalate to such a degree that mankind faces the end of civilisation itself.

It's spooky stuff from the mind of Russell T Davies Russell T Davies (real name: Russell Davies, born April 27, 1963) is a television producer and writer. He is best known for writing ground-breaking and sometimes controversial drama serials such as Queer as Folk and The Second Coming , who reinvented Doctor Who. Captain Jack is joined by regular cohorts Gwen Cooper (Eve Myles) and Ianto Jones (Gareth David-Lloyd).
