Capstone Turbine and Active Power Form Strategic Marketing Alliance; MicroTurbines to Become Part of Power Solutions Package for Japan.

WOODLAND HILLS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 15, 1999--

Capstone Turbine Capstone Turbine Corporation NASDAQ: CPST, incorporated in 1988, is a California based gas turbine manufacturer that specializes in microturbine power and heat cogeneration systems. Capstone has sold and shipped more than 3,000 of these one-moving-part systems worldwide.  Corporation and Active Power Corporation of Tokyo today announced a strategic marketing alliance. The partnership will make Active Power a value-added reseller A value-added reseller (VAR) is a company that adds some feature(s) to an existing product(s), then resells it (usually to end-users) as an integrated product or complete "turn-key" solution.  and systems integrator for the Capstone MicroTurbine(TM) system, a highly reliable, low-noise, low-emission, power generator.

"Active Power's reputation, leadership and expertise in the field of power generation and management are an excellent match for Capstone Turbine's focus and commitments," said Ake Almgren, Capstone's president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board. . "This ground-breaking agreement will bring Capstone's leading-edge microturbine technology to the growing distributed generation Distributed generation generates electricity from many small energy sources. It has also been called also called on-site generation, dispersed generation, embedded generation, decentralized generation, decentralized energy or  market in Japan."

In Japan, as in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area. , the Capstone MicroTurbine can be used by public utilities and energy providers of all types -- as well as by commercial and light industrial facilities -- to generate clean power. The Capstone MicroTurbine can function as a stand-alone unit as well as connected to the local electric grid (an optional controller provides automatic switching). When connected to the grid, the microturbine produces high quality back-up power that protects against "dirty power" outages, including dangerous voltage drops.

"This affiliation with Capstone Turbine Corporation will assist Active Power Corporation in our sales and leasing of much cleaner, much lower-maintenance alternatives to older technology power generators," said Yukihiro Tsutsumi, chairman of the board of Active Power Corporation. "Application of the innovative Capstone MicroTurbine will range from small shops to residential buildings to construction sites and more."

Japan, which has some of the highest electric power costs in the world, is exploring innovative ways to deliver electricity to a power-hungry population. Energy companies throughout Japan are interested in the Capstone's technology, because it allows them to deliver clean power when and where it is needed without requiring a large capital investment.

The Capstone MicroTurbine Model 330

With its 30 kW rating, the Capstone MicroTurbine Model 330 is quiet and produces a very low level of nitrous oxide nitrous oxide or nitrogen (I) oxide, chemical compound, N2O, a colorless gas with a sweetish taste and odor. Its density is 1.977 grams per liter at STP. It is soluble in water, alcohol, ether, and other solvents.  (NOx) gas emissions. The NOX emissions of the natural gas powered Capstone MicroTurbine are less than 9 ppm. Traditional diesel generators produce more than 2,000 ppm NOX.

Capstone offers versions of the Model 330 fueled by high pressure natural gas, high pressure gaseous gas·e·ous

Capstone also manufactures a diesel-fueled version for hybrid electric buses.
