Capricorn Technologies Introduces New PowerStore(TM) Data Storage Device.

Leading Provider of Affordable, Power-Efficient Data Storage to Unveil High- Performance Device at Supercomputing 2006

SAN FRANCISCO San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden  -- Capricorn Technologies Capricorn Technologies is a low-cost, high-density, energy efficient data storage solutions provider based in San Francisco, California. The founder and CEO is C.R. Saikley. , leading the next data storage revolution by supplying low cost, low maintenance, low power consuming, high density data storage systems, today announced the release of the newest member of its' PetaBox[TM] family, the PowerStore. The official unveiling will take place at Supercomputing in Tampa, November 11-17, booth #447, where Capricorn, in association with the Vanderbilt University Vanderbilt University, at Nashville, Tenn.; coeducational; chartered 1872 as Central Univ. of Methodist Episcopal Church, founded and renamed 1873, opened 1875 through a gift from Cornelius Vanderbilt. Until 1914 it operated under the auspices of the Methodist Church.  Advanced Computing Center for Research and Education (ACCRE), will demonstrate a full working rack of PowerStore devices.

The PowerStore, like the PetaBox GB series, provides raw storage capacity ranging from 1TB to 3TB in a 1U form factor. But unlike the GB series of nearline storage Nearline storage (where Nearline is a contraction of Near-online) is a term used in computer science to describe an intermediate type of data storage. It is a compromise between online storage (constant, very rapid access to data) and offline storage (infrequent  devices, the PowerStore has been built for performance. The original Parallel ATA (PATA) interface was launched in 1986.  drives, duo-core processor, GbE, and support for hardware RAID, the PowerStore delivers access and read/write speeds up to 8X faster than the GB series.

Storage software," states Alan Tacket, Technical Director of ACCRE. "The results are impressive, to say the least. With this technology, we have achieved a sustained transfer write speed of 3GB/s (3,000MB/s) over a period of 30 minutes, moving a total of ~5.5TB of data. To put that in perspective, we are storing data at a rate equivalent to 4.6 CDROMs per second!"

"The PetaBox PowerStore design was inspired by customer requests for a machine that could handle demands for faster data delivery and I/O (Input/Output) The transfer of data between the CPU and a peripheral device. "ACCRE's tests with the PowerStore have proven that our expectations for throughput with this box have been exceeded. Design features and components allow us to maintain the low entry cost, low power draw, and low failure rate that have been and will continue to be the hallmarks of Capricorn storage products."

About the PowerStore

PowerStore storage units are 1U devices designed to deliver performance, storage density, reliability, and scalability at a low cost and with a minimum power budget. Equipped with 4 x SATA drives, duo-core processor, GbE and hardware RAID support, the PowerStore is the latest generation of the PetaBox affordable, energy efficient data storage family and a building block for clustered datastores.
