Entertainment Editors/Music Writers

HOLLYWOOD--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--Oct. 31, 2001

Capitol Records Capitol Records is a major United States-based record label, owned by EMI, located in Hollywood, California. Its headquarters building, the Capitol Tower, is a major landmark near the corner of Hollywood and Vine.  celebrates the life of the legendary band leader with its January 29, 2002 release of "Les Brown Les Brown may refer to:
  • Les Brown (bandleader) (1912–2001), U.S. Big Band leader
  • Les Brown Jr., full-time leader of the Band of Renown since 2001
  • Les Brown (motivational speaker) (born 1945), American author

The new CD features 25 standards from the Big Band Era including: "Stardust star·dust

2. A cluster of stars too distant to be seen individually, resembling a dimly luminous cloud of dust. Not in scientific use.

," "Moonlight In Vermont," "Perfidia," "Harlem Nocturne nocturne (nŏk`tûrn) [Fr.,=night piece], in music, romantic instrumental piece, free in form and usually reflective or languid in character. John Field wrote the first nocturnes, influencing Chopin in the writing of his 19 nocturnes for piano. " and "I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm."

Brown's career began in the mid-1930's with his college band, The Duke Blue Devils Duke University's 26 varsity sports teams, known as the Blue Devils, compete in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The name comes from the French "Chasseursles Diables Bleus" or "Blue Devils."[1]

Duke's varsity teams have won nine NCAA national championships.
. In 1938 he formed the group that would become his "Band Of Renown." (They're listed in The Guinness Book of World Records(R) as the longest-performing pop band in history, together over sixty years.) Their big break came in 1945 when, along with a young singer named Doris Day Doris Mary Ann von Kappelhoff (born April 3, 1924)[1] is an American singer, actress, and animal welfare advocate known as Doris Day. A vivacious blonde with a wholesome image, Day was one of the most prolific actresses of the 1950s and 1960s. , they produced the number-one song in the country, "Sentimental Journey." It would remain Les Brown's signature tune throughout the rest of his career.

Les Brown And His Band Of Renown signed with Capitol Records in 1955 at a time when many stars of the Big Band Era were downsizing (1) Converting mainframe and mini-based systems to client/server LANs.

(2) To reduce equipment and associated costs by switching to a less-expensive system.

(jargon) downsizing
their groups or disbanding altogether. Instead, Brown reinvented his sound. The band, once known for "sweet" tunes like "Sentimental Journey" and novelty numbers like "Joltin' Joe DiMaggio Noun 1. Joe DiMaggio - United States professional baseball player noted for his batting ability (1914-1999)
DiMaggio, Joseph Paul DiMaggio
," became more innovative and jazz-oriented. They kept recording -- nearly sixty albums in all -- they kept touring, and, key to their remarkable longevity longevity (lŏnjĕv`ĭtē), term denoting the length or duration of the life of an animal or plant, often used to indicate an unusually long life. , they worked steadily on television: first with Steve Allen and, later, eight years on "The Dean Martin Show."

Still, Les Brown will probably be best remembered for his half-century long collaboration with Bob Hope; a partnership that began on radio in 1947 and lasted through numerous TV specials and no fewer than 18 Christmas tours to entertain U.S. armed forces abroad.

Ever the trouper, Les Brown kept recording and touring, often sharing the baton with son Les Brown, Jr., until a few months before his death in January 2001 at the age of 88.

This release represents the best of his recordings during the Capitol years.
