Capitol Broadcasting's WRAL-FM Makes the Transition to HD Radio With Harris Transmitter; Digital Television Pioneer to Begin Broadcasting IBOC Signal.

WRAL-FM, Raleigh/Cary/Durham/Chapel Hill, North Carolina, a member of the digital television pioneering group, Capital Broadcasting Company, and the first commercial radio station on the East Coast to be licensed to broadcast HD Radio(TM), began broadcasting an HD Radio audio signal on December 20, 2002, with Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS) Broadcast Communications Division's Z-HD(TM)-6 solid-state digital DAB transmitter and the DEXSTAR(TM) AM/FM IBOC exciter.

Based on Harris' ultra-redundant Z-CD FM solid-state transmitters, the Z-HD series transmitters for IBOC offer all of the benefits of the Z-CD transmitters, including built-in reliability with the patented Harris innovation, "Z-Plane," an isolation combiner that keeps the transmitter on the air at full power even when an RF module is removed. The Z-HD transmitters use complex linearity and precorrection technologies developed for digital television to prevent intermodulation and other distortion products from occurring. The result is in a mask-compliant signal that eliminates the need for costly high-power, external bandpass filters.
