Capital Improvement Program -- April Status Report.


NEW ORLEANS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 20, 1999--

Orion Refining Corporation provided the following status report on its Capital Improvement Program through the end of April 1999.

The following major plants and units were operated during the month -- Crude Unit, Vacuum Unit, both Sulfur Recovery Units, Coker, VGO VGO Vigo, Spain (Airport Code)

 HDS (Hitachi Data Systems, Santa Clara, CA, www.hds.com) A leading provider of high-end storage hardware, software and services. Part of the Information Systems & Telecommunications Division of Hitachi Ltd.  Units and the Naphtha naphtha (năp`thə, năf`–), term usually restricted to a class of colorless, volatile, flammable liquid hydrocarbon mixtures.  Hydrotreater.  and HDS units ran well, with the distillate product meeting low sulfur diesel specifications. An average of 1,950 tons per day of coke and 180 long tons per day of sulfur were produced.

Orion Refining has planned a routine maintenance turnaround for the first week of June. All Phase I units will be shut down for maintenance. Minor work will be performed in the coker and some catalyst in the Gas Oil train of the HDS unit will be replaced.

Progress on the Capital Improvement Program continues with the successful completion and start-up of the second sulfur recovery unit. Field work continues on the FCC (1) (Federal Communications Commission, Washington, DC, www.fcc.gov) The U.S. government agency that regulates interstate and international communications including wire, cable, radio, TV and satellite. The FCC was created under the U.S.  Unit, the Alkylation alkylation /al·kyl·a·tion/ (al?ki-la´shun) the substitution of an alkyl group for an active hydrogen atom in an organic compound.

 Unit, and on the Phase II Offsite projects. There are currently about 1,400 construction people onsite. Tracking of labor productivity and materials and equipment purchases indicates that we are still on budget. The completion of Phase II remains scheduled for year-end.

Orion Refining Corporation owns and operates a large refinery, located near New Orleans, designed to process primarily heavy, sour crude and feedstocks.
