Capel Smiley pulls off 33-1 Doncaster stunner for Gifkins.

CAPEL SMILEY, at 33-1 the rank outsider rank outsider ntotaler Außenseiter m, totale Außenseiterin f

of the field, produced a stunning performance to land the pounds 9,000 Carlsberg Yorkshire St Leger over 661m at Doncaster - and there was very little fluke about it, writes Jonathan Kay.

Reserving his best break of the event for when it mattered most, the Tony Gifkins-trained dog did drop back into third behind Kinda Easy and Carbarns Tom, but remained on the premises while market principals Crown Rover, who had trapped poorly, and Droopys Zach dropped right back after first bend trouble.

Capel Smiley was really flying by the fourth bend and swept past Kinda Easy at the fifth, powering home from that point to beat Carbarns Tom by almost two lengths in a joint best-ofevent 41.34sec.

"That was very unexpected," said Lee Gifkins, who owns the winner in partnership with Chris Sliney, afterwards. "That was probably a better race than the [William Hill] St Leger final itself and I was hoping he'd be third or fourth, but he's run a blinder. He'll be even better next year but goes for the [Coral] Essex Vase at Romford on Friday first."

He's only just coming up 17 months old and can only progress."

Mike McKenna, sponsor of the unraced competition, got some of his money back when his own Arctic Monkey, trained by Ted Soppitt, gamely took the Britishbred event, holding off Ring Ouzel ouzel

There was a popular local success when Eddie Link''s Run Of The Hawk bounced back from his Yorkshire St Leger disappointment by justifying strong support in a 661m open. There was a minor scare when he was barged out of the way by Roman Jupiter at the first bend, but he chased that rival down to lead at the fifth and drew clear for a four lengths victory in 41.66sec.

Trainer Chris Allsopp recorded a double courtesy of Officer Donagh and Little Jig, Target Gold landed some hefty bets when taking the opening televised event on his bow for Julie Bateson, and Gabba Gabba Hey bounced back from a sub-par Newcastle effort to win the track's first 705m open.
