Cape Breton University rejects freedom of speech.


Cape Breton, NS -- As reported earlier (see C.I. July/August 2006, p. 31), Nova Scotia history professor David Mullah mullah

Muslim title applied to a scholar or religious leader, especially in the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent. It means “lord” and has also been used in North Africa as an honorific attached to the name of a king, sultan, or member of the nobility.
 has become the target of homosexual student Shane Wallis' ire. The student complained to the N.S. Human Rights Commission. Prof. Mullah had criticized the Anglican Church's permissive stand on same-sex so-called marriage in letters to his then-bishop, which he posted on his website. Prof. Mullan has now been punished by Cape Breton University Cape Breton University (CBU), formerly the "University College of Cape Breton" (UCCB), is a Canadian university in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality, near Sydney, Nova Scotia. Primarily an undergraduate institution, CBU is the only university located on Cape Breton Island.  and fined two weeks' pay ($2,100).

Prof. Mullah has interpreted this fine as "a declaration of war on freedom of speech," and Catholic Insight agrees with this interpretation. We urge readers to support Prof. Mullan and to reprimand the university. Addresses:
