Tech Firm Helps JFK High School Students Prepare for Battle

CapTech Ventures Inc., a Richmond-based e-business strategy, design and development firm, is helping a group of students from John F. Kennedy High School John F.  School of Engineering FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition Regionals will be held March 8-10 at VCU's Stuart C. Siegel Center The arena opened in 1999. It is home to the Virginia Commonwealth University Rams basketball team who enjoy one of the nation's best home court winning percentages since moving into the facility. . The annual competition gives high school students an opportunity to work with local businesses, engineers and many others as they build a robot that will solve a challenge created by FIRST. This year's challenge is to place as many balls in a 10-foot basket as possible, using their robot. An anticipated 4,500 hundred spectators next month will watch 70 high school teams from the Richmond area as well as Northern Virginia, Brazil and Puerto Rico compete.

"We got very excited about this competition last year and knew that we wanted to get involved this year," said Sandy Williamson, CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  and founding partner at CapTech. "We know the talent that is present in Richmond's school system, and we want to make sure these young people get their chance to shine. These kids are the future for Richmond's technology community."

In addition to serving as an overall event sponsor, CapTech also is working with JFK's team at the company's West Main Street technology lab on the future design and development of the team's Web site. CapTech also donated shirts for the JFK team that show other sponsors' logos including Jewett Automation, GE Financial Assurance, NASA Langley, Virginia Commonwealth University and the Virginia Business Education Partnership.

JFK's team has even more to be excited about this year. They are competing in the FIRST Robotics Competition The FIRST Robotics Competition is a high school robotics competition organized by FIRST. As of early 2007, 1,303 high school teams of 32,500[1] students from Brazil, Canada, The Netherlands, Israel, the United States, the United Kingdom, Mexico, and others compete to  national championship this April at Walt Disney World's Epcot Center in Orlando, Fla.

David Franklin, JFK Robotics Team Coordinator/Coach and physics teacher said, "CapTech is helping our kids achieve a dream. Without companies like CapTech and our other team sponsors, we would not be able to offer JFK students an educational opportunity like this."
