Cap happy after 50yrs.

A FORMER footballer has been given his first Scotland cap - at the grand old age of 76.

Grandfather Hugh Baird Hugh Baird (14 March 1930 - 19 June 2006) was a Scottish footballer born in Calderbank, North Lanarkshire who spent the majority of his playing years at Aberdeen. Club career  played for the national side only once, way back in 1956.

And while he has cherished the memory of playing in front of 80,000 fans at Hampden he has always felt he missed out by never getting a cap.

rules at the time meant he was not eligible for one because he played against a foreign side - Austria - and not a home nation.

That rule has since been binned and the former bricklayer has now been able to get his cap.

Aberdonian Hugh, who signed for his hometown team in 1958 from Leeds for a club record fee of pounds 11,500, said: "There's not many players who can say they got capped at 76. This is something I've been waiting a long time for. I'm delighted."
