It is located about 13 miles west of Asheville, North Carolina. Canton is notable for having one of the steepest streets in the United States: Mears Avenue has a maximum gradient of 28%. , has named its new 40-acre recreational facility the International Paper Sports Complex, in honor of the exemplary work the company has done to pursue re-use of its property in the community. The company is granting the use of more than forty acres for the Town's development of six baseball fields, five soccer fields, fitness trails, a recreation center and several picnic and concession areas. The complex is expected to be ready for use within a year.

Town Manager William G. Stamey said, "This is an outstanding opportunity for state, local and private sectors to come together to provide a recreational complex that will most assuredly improve the quality of life for the people of Canton, Haywood County, and western North Carolina Western North Carolina (often abbreviated as WNC) is the region of North Carolina which includes the Appalachian Mountains, thus it is often known geographically as the state's Mountain Region. ." n a widened or fanned-out portion of a prepared cavity, usually established deliberately to increase the retention and resistance form. with an anticipated grant from the North Carolina Clean Water Trust Fund to improve the Rough Creek watershed. The watershed includes Beaverdam Creek, which runs alongside the International Paper Sports Complex. The combination of projects promises to make the complex an even greater local asset by delivering an array of activities for sport and outdoor enthusiasts, on the same site.

Businesses will have new options to create revenue and provide important social benefits, through activities such as hosting local tournaments.
