Town Manager William G. Stamey said, "This is an outstanding opportunity for state, local and private sectors to come together to provide a recreational complex that will most assuredly improve the quality of life for the people of Canton, Haywood County, and western North Carolina." Stamey continued, "It has been a pleasure to work with International Paper to bring the project to its present status, working toward its completion within our targeted twelve to fourteen months time frame. We are truly indebted to International Paper. They have proven themselves to be outstanding corporate citizens."
In addition, the Town's development project will dovetail with an anticipated grant from the North Carolina Clean Water Trust Fund to improve the Rough Creek watershed. The watershed includes Beaverdam Creek, which runs alongside the International Paper Sports Complex. The combination of projects promises to make the complex an even greater local asset by delivering an array of activities for sport and outdoor enthusiasts, on the same site.
"By using the property as recreational area, the Town will have a home for all kinds of sports and outdoor activities that people can enjoy. Businesses will have new options to create revenue and provide important social benefits, through activities such as hosting local tournaments. The restoration of the stream adds an environmentally meaningful achievement for the community," said Tom Richardson, International Paper project manager. "International Paper is honored to have its name on the complex, and pleased to have worked with the town on such a beneficial project."
Charles "Skeeter" Curtis, recreation commission chairman for the Town of Canton said, "International Paper has provided us with a great opportunity to update and expand our recreation program. I look forward to working with our citizens, the town management, and International Paper to provide a first class recreational facility that will fit the needs of the community."
