Canopus licenses CompCore's SoftPEG, the leading software MPEG player for the PC.

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 22, 1995--Canopus Co., Ltd. announced publicly today its agreement to license SoftPEG(TM), the PC industry's most technically advanced software MPEG (Moving Pictures Experts Group) An ISO/ITU standard for compressing digital video. Pronounced "em-peg," it is the universal standard for digital terrestrial, cable and satellite TV, DVDs and digital video recorders (DVRs).  player, from CompCore Multimedia, Inc.

By licensing SoftPEG(TM), Canopus adds a powerful, cost-effective MPEG solution to its line of multimedia products.

"Canopus' adoption of our MPEG player for inclusion with their hardware products makes MPEG available and affordable for many PC users," explained George Haber, President of CompCore Multimedia.

"Canopus provides scalable solutions for MPEG," said Hiroshi Yamada, President and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of Canopus Co. Ltd. "I feel SoftPEG has the best quality and performance among software MPEG decoders."

Canopus will be bundling SoftPEG(TM) with the Power Windows series, its line of graphics accelerators. Canopus Corporation has developed a unique GUI interface called Power Cinema that uses SoftPEG(TM), and is likely to capture the attention of many.

The SoftPEG(TM) MPEG Decoder generates unparalleled picture and sound quality, without requiring any additional hardware. Using similar algorithms to those CompCore uses in its patented hardware MPEG products, SoftPEG(TM) out performs even some hardware MPEG decoders. It decodes MPEG-1 and displays 30 frame-per-second smooth, fully synchronized audio/video on Power PC, Pentium, MIPS (Million Instructions Per Second) The execution speed of a computer. For example, .5 MIPS is 500,000 instructions per second; 100 MIPS is a hundred million instructions per second. , and UNIX UNIX
