Canon expands line of document management systems at AIIM '96; high performance scanner and Canofile for Windows software complement line of turn-key electronic filing systems.CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 1, 1996--Canon U.S.A. Inc. has expanded its role as the leading provider of imaging solutions with the introduction of the DR-3020 Document Scanner An optical scanner geared to office documents rather than photographs. Also called "office scanners," "enterprise scanners" and "business scanners," desktop models have automatic document feeders that can scan in the range of approximately 15 to 100 pages per minute. and Canofile for Windows software here at AIIM (Association for Information and Image Management International, Silver Spring, MD, www.aiim.org) A membership organization founded in 1943 devoted to creating industry standards and disseminating information about the document management industry. '96. Equipped with a built-in image compression Noun 1. image compression - the compression of graphics for storage or transmission compression - encoding information while reducing the bandwidth or bits required board, the scanner captures up to 40 pages per minute and supports ISIS drivers for application flexibility. When combined with Canofile for Windows software, virtually any 486 or Pentium based PC becomes an affordable document management tool. "By offering a lightning-fast, double-sided document scanner and all the software necessary for indexing, filing and retrieving a variety of documents, we have extended our storage solutions to businesses of all sizes," said Robert Stankard, director and general manager, Canon U.S.A.'s Image Filing Systems Division. "This is a logical complement to the highly successful Canofile 250 and 510 turn-key Electronic Filing Systems and marks the beginning of a new concept in document management." High-Performance Rotary Scanner The DR-3020 Document Scanner is a compact, desktop model that offers convenient front operation to make intensive scanning easy. There are multiple scanning modes -- Simplex for single-side and Duplex for two-sides. And two contact image sensors Contact Image Sensors (CIS) are a relatively recent technological innovation in the field of optical flatbed scanners that are rapidly replacing CCDs in low power and portable applications. read the front and back of a document in a single pass for fast throughput. The unit scans at resolutions of 300 x 300, 300 x 150 or 200 x 200 dots per inch, depending on the application's requirement. Text-mode and Photo-mode provide added image fidelity. Reliable Feeding and Automatic Operation Operation of the scanner is simple: the device automatically determines and adjusts to the thickness of the document and its size, ranging from business card to legal. It then captures only the image area to minimize the disk storage space required on the PC. The feed tray can hold 100 pages for high volume processing, while the unit's convenient stacking feature maintains the original feeding order with facedown output. Scanner Control Sheets, which contain machine-readable codes, control various scanning functions, including Simplex or Duplex scanning and text or half-tone mode operation, as well as separate pages into folders. Canofile for Windows Increases Archiving Flexibility Canofile for Windows software can also provide other indexing parameters. Users can define a maximum of 16 index fields, which consist of a combination of text, numerical or date fields. Storage is hierarchical, consisting of databases, libraries, cabinets, documents and pages. The pages are stored in TIFF format, which can be read by many desk top publishing and other document-oriented software. "With the ease of operation and low price, Canofile for Windows can be used in legal firms, insurance offices, banks, hospitals and other environments where documents are used by one or several people," furthered Stankard. "The digital storage of information makes efficient collaboration possible; a document can be transferred from one location to another by way of electronic mail and work-group software or stored in an electronic file, magneto-optical disk (hardware, storage) magneto-optical disk - (MO) A plastic or glass disk coated with a compound (often TbFeCo) with special optical, magnetic and thermal properties. The disk is read by bouncing a low-intensity laser off the disk. or CD-ROM CD-ROM: see compact disc. CD-ROM in full compact disc read-only memory Type of computer storage medium that is read optically (e.g., by a laser). and made accessible to everyone." Canofile for Windows is also compatible with the Canofile 250 and 510 systems, which use a Canon magneto-optical disk and a propriety file format for the storage of documents. Open Software Interface The Canon DR-3020 has a SCSI interface SCSI interface - SCSI adaptor and is compliant with the ISIS scanner interface which is widely used in document management and imaging applications(a).
