Canon and Sandia joint development of Optical Card system integrated in MultiStation card printing system.LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 17, 1996--Canon U.S.A. Inc. and Sandia Imaging Systems, based in Carrollton, Texas, jointly announced Tuesday that Canon's Optical Card technology is being integrated in Sandia's MultiStation high-volume ID card printing system. Canon and Sandia have developed the Optical Card encoding module incorporating Canon's Optical Card technology in Sandia's MultiStation. Due to the high performance of Canon's Optical Card Read/Write drive RW50, which is the worlds fastest, lightest and smallest compact Read/Write drive, the encoding module only requires one drive to ensure maximum throughput with a wide margin of overhead. This results in less mechanical card handling and a more reliable overall system. The MultiStation including the Optical Card encoding module has the same performance as the current MultiStation in terms of the encoded data amount and speed. A commercially available product is expected by the end of 1996, and Sandia's MultiStation is the only printing system in the market to be able to print and encode the Optical Cards in one pass. Sandia's printers offer the best quality in the market and are among the most reliable printers for high volume production. The printers feature two-sided full bleed edge-to-edge color prints in one pass, and high yield dye sublimation ribbon usage due to individual printheads dedicated to each color. Sandia was selected to supply its printers for U.S. INS (Immigration immigration, entrance of a person (an alien) into a new country for the purpose of establishing permanent residence. Motives for immigration, like those for migration generally, are often economic, although religious or political factors may be very important. & Naturalization naturalization, official act by which a person is made a national of a country other than his or her native one. In some countries naturalized persons do not necessarily become citizens but may merely acquire a new nationality. Services) program to issue identification cards to the nation for the next three years (Employment Authorization Document An Employment Authorization Document (EAD), EAD card, known popularly as Work Permit, is a document issued by United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) that provides its holder a legal right to work in the United States of America. , Alien Resident Card, Border Crossing Card and INSPASS INSPASS Immigration and Naturalization Service Passenger Accelerated Service System (US Immigration and Naturalization Service) ). These cards include various features such as 2-D bar-codes, hologram, optical recording zone and/or magnetic stripe. Sandia's printers are also issuing driver's licenses in New South Wales New South Wales, state (1991 pop. 5,164,549), 309,443 sq mi (801,457 sq km), SE Australia. It is bounded on the E by the Pacific Ocean. Sydney is the capital. The other principal urban centers are Newcastle, Wagga Wagga, Lismore, Wollongong, and Broken Hill. in Australia. This MultiStation will be displayed in Sandia's booth at CardTech SecurTech '96 Government, North America's premier card technology show and conference at Hyatt Regency Crystal City in Arlington, Virginia on Sept. 30 to Oct. 1, 1996. Canon's Optical Card is the shape and size of a credit card, and can store up to four Megabytes of digital information - the equivalent of 1,600 pages of text. The data stored on the card can include a digital image of the cardholder; biometric templates; access, entry and exit logs; permits, visas, entitlements, eligibility data, etc. Canon's Optical Card is being used by the Canadian government in there CANPASS CANPASS Canadian Pass (document allowing entry into Canada at remote locales) Airport project as a positive ID card for frequent travellers. The Canon Optical Card is also currently widely used in health care projects in Europe and Japan as a portable clinical record, allowing patients to carry up-to-date clinical and medical emergency information with them at all times. The Canon Optical Card complies with relevant standards published by the International Organization for Standardization International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Organization for determining standards in most technical and nontechnical fields. Founded in Geneva in 1947, its membership includes more than 100 countries. (ISO (1) See ISO speed.
