PMA Booth No. J91 -- Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in optical and imaging technology, has redesigned its extremely popular EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro lens n. 1. a camera lens designed to focus at short distances so as to achieve photographic magnifications of objects larger than with standard lenses.  to incorporate a ring-type Ultrasonic Motor An ultrasonic motor is a type of electric motor formed from the ultrasonic vibration of a component, the stator, placed against another, the rotor or slider depending on the scheme of operation (rotation or linear translation).  (USM USM

 with full-time manual focus capabilities.

This latest addition to Canon's renowned EF lens line for EOS Eos (ē`ŏs), in Greek religion and mythology, goddess of dawn; daughter of the Titans Hyperion and Theia. Every morning she arose early and preceded her brother Helios into the heavens.  cameras is also the first lens in its class to use an inner focusing mechanism. This feature enables the length of the lens to remain constant, even when adjusting focus, making it more convenient to work with close subjects.

The new lens offers continuous focusing from infinity to 1:1 life size without accessories. When shooting at life size (1x) magnification Magnification

A measure of the effectiveness of an optical system in enlarging or reducing an image. For an optical system that forms a real image, such a measure is the lateral magnification m
, the minimum working distance between the lens and the subject is approximately six inches, providing enough room for an additional light source, such as Canon's new Macro Ring Lite MR-14EX.

&uot;Canon's new EF 100mm Macro USM lens was re-designed to accommodate the precise needs of consumers and photographers who do a lot of close-up photography,&uot; said Yukiaki Hashimoto, vice president and general manager, Photographic Products Group, Canon U.S.A., Inc. &uot;The new lens now gives our customers the flexibility and KNOW HOW they need to maximize their creativity and produce images that are unique to their style of photography.&uot;

Focus Advantages

The optical design of the new lens incorporates a three-group &uot;floating system&uot; for focusing and image quality adjustment. In this system, two lens groups are used to focus the image, while the rear group moves independently to ensure optimal image quality at all focusing distances. As a result, the overall image quality of the new EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM matches or exceeds that of its predecessor. In addition, the new macro lens provides full-time manual focus capabilities, allowing photographers to make critical focusing refinements simply by rotating the focusing ring. This feature, available even when the lens is set for AF, gives photographers an added degree of convenience.

The new EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM lens is fully compatible with Canon's EF12 and EF25 extension tubes as well as Macro Ring Lites ML-3 and MR-14EX. The optional Canon Tripod Collar B(B) is an ideal accessory for optimizing the weight balance between camera and lens. Another useful optional accessory is Lens Hood Noun 1. lens hood - a tubular attachment used to keep stray light out of the lens of a camera

attachment - a supplementary part or accessory
 ET-67, which prevents stray light from entering the lens during use. This hood can also be reverse-mounted on the lens for storage. A third dedicated accessory is Lens Pouch LP1219.

The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM lens Canon's 100/2.8 Macro USM for the EF mount replaces an earlier lens of the same specifications, but without a USM autofocus motor. The optical formula did not change between incarnations.

The 100/2.
 will be available at dealers nationwide in March with a suggested list price of $1,100.
