) announced today the immediate availability of the new DR-3080C high-speed color document scanner An optical scanner geared to office documents rather than photographs. Also called "office scanners," "enterprise scanners" and "business scanners," desktop models have automatic document feeders that can scan in the range of approximately 15 to 100 pages per minute. , a compact, robust desktop unit aimed at capturing more of the rapidly growing market of departmental users. Offering multiple scanning modes, including 24-bit color, 256 levels of grayscale In computing, a grayscale or greyscale digital image is an image in which the value of each pixel is a single sample. Displayed images of this sort are typically composed of shades of gray, varying from black at the weakest intensity to white at the strongest, though in  at up to 300 dots-per-inch resolution, Simplex and Duplex, the DR-3080C includes features and functions typically found in larger, more expensive low-volume production machines. A Web cast introducing the product will take place today at http://www.canonscanners.com.

Built upon the strengths of Canon's highly regarded DR-3000 series document scanners, the DR-3080C, with its color capability, offers users even greater scanning versatility. Through the use of state-of-the-art feeding and image sensor An image sensor is a device that converts a visual image to an electric signal. It is used chiefly in digital cameras and other imaging devices. It is usually an array of charge-coupled devices (CCD) or CMOS sensors such as active-pixel sensors.  technology, the DR-3080C provides fast, efficient scanning of up to 86 images per minute (in Duplex mode). The DR-3080C also includes a 100-sheet Automatic Document Feeder In multifunction or all-in-one printers, fax machines, photocopiers and scanners, Automatic Document Feeder or ADF is a feature which takes several pages and feeds the paper one page at a time into the scanner, allowing the user to scan (and thereby copy, print, or fax)  that automatically adjusts for documents ranging from business cards to larger-than-legal size, simplifying continuous batch scanning of mixed documents. "Canon's new DR-3080C is likely to capture a healthy share of the departmental segment, given its competitively strong feature set, attractive price point, and Canon's expanded distribution strategy," said Susan Moyse, an industry analyst with InfoTrends.

Small enough to fit easily on any desktop, the DR-3080C simplifies every aspect of image capture. The pop-up virtual Scan Panel allows settings to be changed during scanning, without interrupting the scan job. Pre-Scan allows users to adjust brightness and contrast for a batch of documents dynamically, while previewing and fine-tuning just the first page. The Skip Blank Page feature automatically detects and deletes blank pages, streamlining the transmission of Simplex and Duplex documents in the same batch.

The DR-3080C features two contact image sensors that read the front and back of a document in a single pass for fast throughput. The front sensor is capable of color not of the white race; - commonly meaning, esp. in the United States, of negro blood, pure or mixed.

Both ISIS and TWAIN drivers are included with the DR-3080C to ensure flexible connectivity and compatibility with a host of scanning software applications. All DR-3080C drivers work with Windows 95/98/2K/Me and Windows NT operating systems.

"The ISIS driver used in the DR-3080C is the first to be completed by a third party -- Canon -- licensing Pixel Translation's QuickDriver development toolkit," said Mark Edson, director of Engineering at ActionPoint, Inc., whose Pixel Translation Division created the ISIS standard for production scanning. "We were delighted to see that this driver passed our certification testing on the first try - a great testimonial to Canon's engineering skills."

The Canon DR-3080C arrives at the marketplace with the seal of approval from a number of software companies that have certified the scanner with their products. These companies include: LaserFiche Document Imaging; eCopy, Inc.; OTG (1) See USB OTG.
