 (IOL) system for treating cataract cataract, in medicine, opacity of the lens of the eye, which impairs vision. In the young, cataracts are generally congenital or hereditary; later they are usually the result of degenerative changes brought on by aging or systemic disease (diabetes). .

The two companies have worked on the new system since May 2005, leveraging their respective expertise. The new system can directly insert a lens into the eye so that it reduces time required by the procedure and relieves the burden on patients.

Canon Staar and NIDEK will market the new product through their own sales channels.
