imageWARE Document Composer is designed to streamline the production of professional-quality publications, especially those that require multiple inserts and content types, such as product manuals, office color quality brochures, monthly reports, and general purpose booklets. imageWARE Document Composer's job management functions include job-level operations, such as pause, resume, and delete, job monitoring, and job template management.

As a component of Canon's imageWARE software suite, Document Composer utilizes the robust back-end database A back-end database is a database that is accessed by users indirectly through an external application rather than by application programming stored within the database itself or by low level manipulation of the data (e.g. through SQL commands).  storage of the imageWARE Document Manager for archival and retrieval of digital print-ready documents. imageWARE Document Composer comes with a simplified toolset for applying page imposition to a variety of print jobs. End users can edit and manipulate chapters and pages. Easy page renumbering is also available.

As a result of the tight integration between imageRUNNER devices and Document Composer, supported finishing features(a) include: simplex, duplex (communications) duplex - Used to describe a communications channel that can carry signals in both directions, in contrast to a simplex channel which only ever carries a signal in one direction.  or booklet mode printing; stapling and subset stapling by chapter; hole punching See UDP hole punching. ; Z-folding; saddle-stitching, and trimming. It has become a de facto standard used in many printers and typesetters. The dynamic publishing features of imageWARE Document Composer are supported by most of Canon's imageRUNNER product line, ranging from the 20 page-per-minute imageRUNNER 2010F through the 105-ppm imageRUNNER 105. imageWARE Document Composer also requires either the Workgroup Edition or Enterprise Edition of the imageWARE Document Manager 2002 R3.1. The imageWARE Web Document Server 2002 R3.1 is also required.
