Canlis Fosters Wine Education with the "Canlis Hospitality in Wine Award".

Open to All Aspiring Master Sommeliers, Canlis Builds Community Outside the Restaurant Through Excellence in the Wine World

SEATTLE -- Who better than the Canlis family and the wine team at Canlis restaurant to initiate an awards program that helps promising sommeliers ascend to Master status? Today, Canlis Managing Owner Mark Canlis and Wine Director Nelson Daquip announced Dennis Kelly Dennis Kelly (born 1970 in New Barnet, London) is a London-based writer.

, Yountville, Calif., as the winner and recipient of the first "Canlis Hospitality in Wine Award" and "Canlis Sommelier Scholarship" -- a $2,000 cash value to be applied to testing fees, travel, and educational expenses associated with becoming a Master Sommelier.

The purpose of establishing the program is to foster excellence for all aspiring Master Sommeliers, and to build community outside the restaurant, Mark Canlis noted. Neither Canlis nor the Court of Master Sommeliers are aware of another independent restaurant who gives to students outside of their own company.

Also in the running for the scholarship was Lisa Rongren of Ray's Boathouse in Seattle. Kelly and Rongren came to Canlis during Taste Washington weekend to compete to best demonstrate their knowledge, ability and personal style in wine service while working one night at the restaurant.

Each year the Court of Master Sommeliers recommends top candidates on the West Coast to be considered by Canlis for the award. Following a rigorous application process, the selected scholarship candidates work at Canlis for one day, beginning with an educational blind tasting led by Canlis Wine Director Nelson Daquip, followed by a night of floor service where the in-house wine team can get acquainted with the applicant's service style, personality and knowledge. The finalist is determined by the Canlis family and wine team. Criteria for the scholarship includes demonstrated technical wine knowledge, blind tasting, and embodiment of the Canlis values of hospitality through wine service, Canlis said.

The "Canlis Hospitality in Wine Award," which is the overriding program for the scholarship, was announced Sept. 12, 2006, during a Canlis celebration of the wine program's outstanding accomplishments to date. The fall event was attended by Canlis wine team alumni who have gone on to become nationally renowned leaders in the wine world, including Shayn Bjorholm of the Washington Wine Wine produced in the U.S. state of Washington has a long and continued history.
