Candle Expands Unix and Client Server Lineup With Products For Oracle, Sybase and NetWare; Candle Command Centers for Databases and Networks Join Candle Solutions for Unix and Windows NT in Distributed Enterprise.

DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 14, 1995--In conjunction with its introduction of the Candle Command Center, Candle Corporation today announced Candle Command Centers for distributed databases A database physically stored in two or more computer systems. Although geographically dispersed, a distributed database system manages and controls the entire database as a single collection of data.  and local area networks (LANs).

First customer shipment for distributed database and LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used.  products is projected for fourth quarter 1995. Candle will be demonstrating Candle Command Centers for networks and distributed databases in its booth at UniForum.

A Candle Command Center for databases will first be available in implementations for Oracle and Sybase systems An earlier family of SQL development tools from Sybase that included SQL Server, SQL Toolset (design, development and control) and Client/Services Interfaces (distributed database architecture). It is no longer supported. See SQL Server. , with a Candle Command Center for networks being offered for NetWare. Initial compatibility will be with Sybase System 10.0, Oracle 7.1.3, and NetWare 3.11.

"Distributed databases are driving the client/server revolution," said Aubrey Chernick, chairman of Candle Corporation. "As long as mission critical computing is being moved to distributed systems Distributed systems (computers)

A distributed system consists of a collection of autonomous computers linked by a computer network and equipped with distributed system software.
, new systems management tools are vital to managing availability. Candle Command Centers for databases ensure the availability of these valuable resources while protecting the availability and performance of vital applications running on them."

Candle Command Centers are highly flexible and scalable solutions that can be utilized as in-depth, full-function point solutions, or integrated with other Candle Command Centers to provide performance and availability management across a heterogeneous enterprise. They are built on Candle's powerful object technology, Candle Technologies (CT), which enables advanced features such as visual programming and remote object distribution. Candle Command Centers are flexible enough to allow users to configure views to meet the technical and business needs of any organization, and are scalable to hundreds of nodes.

Functionality

The new Candle Command Centers for databases and networks monitor system resources (1) In a computer system, system resources are the components that provide its inherent capabilities and contribute to its overall performance. System memory, cache memory, hard disk space, IRQs and DMA channels are examples.  at the client, local server and remote server levels and identify problem areas -- or potential problem areas -- before they impact the availability of critical applications or resources.

The Command Centers collect data from across multiple resources and graphically display it on a central management console A terminal or workstation used to monitor and control a network. See Microsoft Management Console. . This console, or workstation, can display data from various Candle Command Center domains providing a central point of control for large numbers of nodes from similar or disparate systems.

Candle Command Center for Databases

The Candle Command Center for databases will first be available for two of the most popular distributed databases, Oracle and Sybase. The Candle Command Center for databases provides critical systems information for common problems such as application performance bottlenecks, server and database availability, managing DBMS (DataBase Management System) Software that controls the organization, storage, retrieval, security and integrity of data in a database. It accepts requests from the application and instructs the operating system to transfer the appropriate data.  complexity, and resource utilization and planning.

-0- o Application Performance: If the database response is slow or intermittent, the availability -- both of the application and of the business -- is affected. Candle Command Centers for databases pinpoints bottlenecks system-wide that affect application performance by monitoring key resources and identifying lock/latch contentions and application waits due to I/O (Input/Output) The transfer of data between the CPU and a peripheral device. Every transfer is an output from one device and an input to another. See PC input/output.

o Database Availability: If the database isn't available, then the business systems that the departments rely on also become unavailable. Candle Command Centers for databases ensure availability of corporate data by monitoring user connections, server status, rollback A DBMS feature that reverses the current transaction out of the database, returning the data to its former state. A rollback is performed when processing a transaction fails at some point, and it is necessary to start over. See two-phase commit.  and checkpointing, and session limits.

o Managing DBMS Complexity: By nature, the distributed database environment can be extremely complex. Candle Command Centers for databases helps users understand the complex topology topology, branch of mathematics, formerly known as analysis situs, that studies patterns of geometric figures involving position and relative position without regard to size.  of DBMS configurations. It can manage multiple DBMS environments and platforms from a single point, monitor configuration settings and parameter changes which can affect system performance as changes are implemented, and manage the need to reconfigure To change the status of something.  or reallocate Verb 1. reallocate - allocate, distribute, or apportion anew; "Congressional seats are reapportioned on the basis of census data"

Candle Command Center for Networks

The Candle Command Center for networks monitors many aspects of the network, including important areas that can become problems for IS managers: LAN availability, resource utilization and activity, managing LAN complexity, application performance and historical analysis.

o LAN Availability: If users cannot utilize the LAN to its full potential, then, effectively, the LAN and its advantages do not exist, hence you have lost its availability. Candle Command Centers for networks provide status data, such as bottlenecks, for important LAN resources, such as: print servers, fax servers, queue servers, and user connections.

o Resource Utilization and Activity: If resources -- or lack of resources -- is affecting network performance, who is using the resources and how extensively? Candle Command Centers for networks monitor disk space, cache, directory usage, file usage and status, and utilization by users to identify existing or potential problems.

o Managing LAN Complexity: with the dynamic environment of a LAN, disparate elements and platforms can create systems management problems. Candle Command Centers for networks provide information on hardware and software configurations. It monitors configuration settings and NetWare parameters changes, including server configurations and NLM Software that runs in a NetWare server. Although NetWare servers store DOS and Windows applications, they do not execute them. All programs that run in a NetWare server must be compiled into the NLM format. They are typically written in C and use Novell's libraries.  usage to identify potential performance and availability impedances.

o Application Performance: Candle Command Centers for networks monitors file/record locking and job queues The lineup of programs ready to be executed.  which can prohibit availability of the network. The Command Center can also utilize trending and historical reports to allow users to spot trends through historical analysis that could lead to problems in the future. -0-

Candle Command Center Features

The robust nature of the Candle Technologies framework gives the Candle Command Centers for databases and networks a wealth of easy- to-use features, combining strength with simplicity.

o Custom Configuration of Views: Information can be configured into meaningful views set up around technical or business needs, as well as those of the individual user.

o Visual Programming: This simple, intuitive procedure allows users to code alert rules by dragging-and-dropping icons, defining tolerances through pull down menus. Consistent look across all platforms leverages personnel skills, reducing training, labor and management costs.

o Alert Management: Alerts are raised when user-defined thresholds, or alert rules, are met. Alerts can reflect conditions affecting single or multiple systems, applications, or platforms within the network. Clearly shows when performance and availability are threatened.

o Remote Object Distribution: Dramatically reduces costs of duplicating alert rules on each node throughout a network. Once a situation is created, it can be distributed to as many nodes as needed as needed prn. See prn order. .

o Automatic Change Administration: Eliminates the need to code and re-code a situation for hundreds of nodes. When a situation is changed, it will be automatically updated at designated nodes. -0-
