A.A. Michelson Award was presented in recognition of Chernick's technical excellence and professional contributions to the field of computer measurement. Albert Abraham Michelson, a Nobel Prize Nobel Prize, award given for outstanding achievement in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, peace, or literature. The awards were established by the will of Alfred Nobel, who left a fund to provide annual prizes in the five areas listed above.  winner, was a physicist known for his technical accomplishments in measuring the speed of light and for his role as a teacher and inspirer of others.

From the time he founded Candle Corp., Chernick has shown that a commitment to innovation and customers is an excellent formula for success. He demonstrated this formula for success in 1976 when he sought to deliver "the last word in monitoring." To that end, he introduced OMEGAMON, the first real-time solution for monitoring the performance of IBM's mainframe MVS (Multiple Virtual Storage) Introduced in 1974, the primary operating system used with IBM mainframes (the others are VM and DOS/VSE). MVS is a batch processing-oriented operating system that manages large amounts of memory and disk space.  operating system operating system (OS)

With the success of OMEGAMON for MVS, Candle went on to develop a series of OMEGAMON monitors for real-time and historical analysis of system performance of CICS (Customer Information Control System) A TP monitor from IBM that was originally developed to provide transaction processing for IBM mainframes. . Today, Candle is harnessing the power of its OMEGAMON monitors in its new generation of Candle Command Center solutions.

Commitment to Customers

Over the last two decades, Chernick has pioneered several innovations in the software industry. For example, for the first two years in business, he sold his OMEGAMON solution over the telephone, making him one of the first to use telemarketing for major software sales. At the same time, he focused on providing his customers with superior service and support -- and Candle continues to do so today.

Chernick has also assisted customers in understanding the particulars of their computer systems through the Candle Computer Report (CCR 1. CCR - condition code register.
2. CCR - (Database) concurrency control and recovery.
). With a monthly circulation of nearly 70,000, the CCR has been published continually since 1978 and is free of charge to its readers. Its focus is to present the latest information on systems internals. Through informative tutorial articles, the CCR helps its readers better leverage systems performance capabilities.

Candle recently launched a new customer publication, Enterprise, targeting users making the transition to large enterprise production environments composed of both mainframe and client/server applications.

Today, Chernick is at the helm of one of the largest independent software vendors in the world. Over the last 19 years, he has overseen significant expansion at Candle, which currently has more than 1,200 employees in 30 offices worldwide. Candle, the market leader in performance monitoring, has solutions that manage the availability and performance of critical systems, network and console resources, as well as business applications, spanning the enterprise.

Philanthropic Contributions

In addition to his many technical accomplishments, Chernick has also sought to make the world around him a better place. To that end, he formed the Candle Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Candle Corp., which provides donations to organizations that use their funds to help people in the most direct manner possible. One donation funded a three-year program in Africa that taught natives how to cultivate apple trees, which became a new food staple for them.

Another philanthropic effort guided by Chernick is TEAM LA, a program that links Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  area businesses with inner-city communities. One TEAM LA program secures jobs for inner-city students in companies located throughout greater Los Angeles. Another program coordinates the refurbishment and distribution of donated computer components and peripherals to non-profit agencies and schools.
