Candidates vying for role of National Chief. The election date for a new National Chief for the Assembly of First Nations (AFN) is approaching. The event will take place from July 21-23 at the Calgary TELUS Convention Centre during AFN's annual general assembly. The election of candidates for National Chief will be followed by votes placed by approximately 635 band chiefs across the country. Phil Fontaine has held the position of AFN National Chief since 2003, and held another term from 1997 to 2000. In February, former Grand Chief of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations, Perry Bellegarde, formally announced that he will run for the position. Bellegarde, who is also a former Regional Vice Chief for the AFN, is currently a band councilor for the Little Black Bear First Nation. His platform will focus on economic development and education. Two other candidates are Grand Council Chief John Beaucage from Ontario and Shawn A-in-chut Atleo, who is currently AFN's Regional Chief in British Columbia. Beaucage is a citizen of Wasauksing First Nation, and has led the 42 member First Nations of the Anishinabek Nation in Ontario since 2004. He announced in April "An Integrated Approach to Women's Issues" as part of his election platform. Atleo is a Hereditary Chief from the Ahousaht First Nation whose focus is on "the empowerment of Aboriginal people in their efforts of self-determination and well-being." His keystone is working together to build positive and respectful relationships. |
