Candidates ringing up contributions.

Byline: Edward Russo and Randi Bjornstad The Register-Guard

The two highest-profile local political races in Lane County came sharply into focus Monday as freshly filed fund-raising reports made it clear which candidates have the clout to raise lots of cash - and which don't.

In the contest to fill the Eugene mayoral post being vacated by Jim Torrey, the two major candidates - Kitty Piercy "Kitty" Piercy is the current mayor of Eugene, Oregon, sworn in January of 2005.

The press dubbed Piercy's election part of a "shift to the left" for the Eugene City Council.
and Nancy Nathanson - raised nearly $64,000 between them by April 1, according to according to

the reports. Other mayoral candidates lagged far behind.

Piercy was the top money-getter, pulling in $39,423; Nathanson raised $24,360.

The list of their contributors underscored the differences between the candidates. Piercy pulled some of her support from labor and pro-environment business sources; Nathanson drew a portion of her cash from construction, real estate development and gravel mining companies and the Eugene Area Chamber of Commerce.

Meanwhile, in the race for the East Lane County seat on the Lane County Board of Commissioners, incumbent Don Hampton of Oakridge and challenger Faye Stewart, a Cottage Grove Cottage Grove, village (1990 pop. 22,935), Washington co., SE Minn., near the St. Croix River; inc. 1965. Stewart squeaked past Hampton as the top collector, bringing in $20,099 to Hampton's $19,497.

Stewart got cash from KEZI-TV owner Carolyn Chambers; a Pleasant Hill logger and a Cottage Grove construction and rock company.

Ballots for the races go out at the end of this month. The election is May 18.

Just how high the money stakes will go won't be clear until later reports are filed.

Sometimes, the races can get rich.

 commissioners appointed Hampton.

Up to April 1, Piercy, a former state representative and social activist, received a few individual contributions of $500 or more from well-known business people, such as salsa maker Mel Bankoff and wood products maker Deborah Noble, who gave $1,000 and $500, respectively. Piercy also got $3,000 from the Eugene Firefighters Union.

However, small contributors played a big role for her. People who made contributions of $50 or less gave a total of $11,250 to Piercy by April 1.

, received several large contributions, including $1,500 from the Eugene chamber, plus $1,000 donations from such construction-related businesses as Delta Sand & Gravel in Eugene, Hamilton Construction in Springfield, and timber company owner and real estate developer Greg Demers of Veneta.

A complete list of donations and expenditures in Eugene was not immediately available Monday evening as reports were being filed.

Three other Eugene residents will be on primary ballot for mayor. But Eric Gross Eric Gross (born Vienna, 1926) studied at Trinity College of Music, and the University of Aberdeen. Following a very successful career as a pianist (including working as a BBC studio accompanist) he settled in Sydney. , Alphonsus Donnelly and Willie Nicholas have indicated that they won't spend or raise more than $300, said City Recorder Mary Feldman.

Three of the four Eugene City Council seats up for election are contested.

City Councilor Bonny Bonny (bŏn`ē), town, SE Nigeria, in the Niger River delta, on the Bight of Biafra. In the 18th and 19th cent., Bonny was the center of a powerful trading state, and in the 19th cent. it became the leading site for slave exportation in W Africa.  Bettman, seeking a second term in Ward 1, raised $7,604 in the reporting period, more than any other council candidate. Her opponent, commercial real estate broker Tom Slocum, received $3,240. Adam Walsh, a University of Oregon student, who also is running for the seat, raised $1,401.

Big donations included $750 for Bettman from the Eugene Firefighters, and $500 for Slocum from a statewide homebuilders group.

Incumbent Betty Taylor raised $6,536 in the Ward 2 race against school principal Maurie Denner, who received $5,830. Taylor received the bulk of her money in donations of $50 or less. Denner received $750 from the Eugene chamber and $1,000 from Monaco's Toolson.

Scott Meisner, trying for a third term for Ward 7, attracted $4,255 in contributions, including $500 from the Eugene Firefighters. His opponent, Andrea Ortiz, raised $3,154. Ortiz contributed $879 to her own campaign.

In the East Lane race, Hampton, the former Oakridge mayor, faces five challengers for the right to fill the remaining two years of Lininger's original term.

Three of those - Stewart, retired dentist Cedric Hayden of Fall Creek Fall Creek is the name of several places in the United States:

Hayden reported $13,670 in contributions. Herbert took in $6,983.

In the South Eugene commissioner district, incumbent Peter Sorenson faces no opponents. Still, Sorenson pulled in more than $31,326 in the reporting period, and disbursed $24,442.

Much of his disbursements involved paying off debts either to himself or to his unsuccessful campaign for Oregon labor commissioner in 2002.

In North Eugene, incumbent Bobby Green Sr. has collected $1,500 and spent none. His opponent, University of Oregon instructor and tourism consultant Greg Ringer, did not file a report.

The three candidates for Lane County sheriff so far have run bare-bones campaigns.

Russel Burger, chief deputy of the Lane County sheriff's office, has collected $867, while Steven Mackey Steven Mackey is an American composer, guitarist, and music educator.

As a musician growing up listening to and performing vernacular American musics as well as classical music, Mackey's compositions are informed by rock and jazz, though still very much in the avant-garde
