Candidates cite passion for children.

Byline: Mark Baker The Register-Guard

CORRECTION (ran 5/02/03): A story on Page D3 on Tuesday incorrectly identified the occupation of Creswell School Board candidate Vicky Curry. She works as a psychologist resident at the Center for Family Development in Eugene and has a private practice working with youths and families. Also, she served on the budget and the policy committees for the school district.

CRESWELL - A psychology student and an automobile dealership service manager. A portable sawmill Portable sawmills became popular in the United States starting in the 1970s, when the 1973 energy crisis and the back to the land movement had led to renewed interest in small woodlots and in self-sufficiency.  owner and an economic development manager.

All want to be part of the Creswell School Board. Even in these recession-racked times.

Stephen Dignam, economic development manager for the Lane Council of Governments in Eugene, said his experience with finances over the years makes him a good candidate.

"The revenue and expense side of the equation need to be worked on," he said. "I think if we can squeeze every last drop of inefficiency out of the system, we'll be in much better shape."

Dignam and John Sells, the portable sawmill owner, are seeking the Position 3 seat on the board. Incumbent Jim Honer is stepping down.

Sells is a member of the school district's budget committee and the strategic planning Strategic planning is an organization's process of defining its strategy, or direction, and making decisions on allocating its resources to pursue this strategy, including its capital and people.  finance committee, which is charged with trying to balance a budget for the 2003-04 school year.

"I feel that due to my current knowledge and experience with the district's problems, and my experience as a small business owner, I have skills that would benefit the Creswell schools," Sells said.

Among cutbacks the district faces are laying off teachers and at least one administrator in addition to making program cuts, including high school band.

School Board member Vicky Curry, a psychology resident, is running for re-election for the Position 7 spot on the board against Gary Clark Gary C. Clark (born May 1, 1962 in Radford, Virginia) is a former professional American Football wide receiver who played for the Washington Redskins (1985-1992), Phoenix Cardinals (1993-1994) and Miami Dolphins (1995) in the National Football League. , who works at Lithia lith·i·a

Curry said her No. 1 priority would be to begin considering the impact of the district's unfunded liability for the Public Employees Retirement System." That could devastate dev·as·tate

 our school system," she said.

The state needs to tap lottery lottery, scheme for distributing prizes by lot or other method of chance selection to persons who have paid for the opportunity to win. The term is not applicable when lots are drawn without payment by the interested parties to determine some matter, e.g.  revenues for school funding, Clark said.

"If our economy turns around, fine," said Clark, a 1980 graduate of Creswell High School. "But if it doesn't, they're going to have to find another way to fund schools. What they're doing is not good. They've dropped a nuclear bomb on us."

Curry said that the district must explore sharing resources with other districts, whether it be athletics athletics

She also wants the various school board committees to share what they've discussed at school board meetings. Although all the meetings are public, most people can't find the time to attend many of the committee meetings because they often occur in the morning when people are getting ready for work.

"I guess my goal is to try and encourage larger participation," she said.

Incumbent Anne Freske is running unopposed in Position 1.

Incumbent Kathy Thompson is running unopposed in Position 2.
