Called the ScleroPLUS-HP(tm), the system has proven highly effective in clinical studies in treating vascular lesions, including hemangiomas and port-wine stains. Generally present at birth, these conditions are caused by an abnormal and acute dilation dilation /di·la·tion/ (di-la´shun)

reported on the positive results of a study he conducted in which he treated 50 children and adults with a pre-release version of the ScleroPLUS-HP. He concluded: "This [laser] should be the treatment of choice for untreated or previously treated port-wine stains and superficial to moderately thick hemangiomas."

Most impressive, said Geronemus, was the laser's ability to treat infants. Of the 12 treated, 10 had 75 percent or greater clearance after three-and-a-half treatments. No scarring or pigmentary changes were seen.

According to Candela, the ScleroPLUS-HP is the only laser on the market today to deliver the combination of high power or fluences - up to 15J/cm2 at 7mm - and dynamic cooling. The system's Dynamic Cooling Device or DCD (Document Content Description) An XML schema language from Textuality, Microsoft and IBM that is implemented as an RDF vocabulary. It supports data typing and schema reuse and is the successor to XML-Data. See XML schema, RDF and XML. (tm) selectively cools the upper layers of skin prior to the laser pulse, minimizing pain and reducing thermal exposure to the epidermis.

In addition, the new high-powered "HP" provides the complete range of functionality and features that has long kept Candela's ScleroPLUS in demand by medical professionals. These include the flexibility to select the wavelength - 585, 590, 595, or 600 nm - and the fluence Flu´ence
