Cancun Blossoms for Spring and Welcomes Visitors with Newly Minted Stretch of White Powdery Beach.

CANCUN, Mexico -- Springtime is a time for renewal, rebirth and fresh starts - and nowhere does it ring truer than in Cancun. This popular hot-spot, ranked the No. 3 top international destination in Carlson Wagonlit Travel's 2006 Travel Trends Survey, has come back reinvigorated and with beaches more alluring than ever.

The beach recovery effort, which focused on restoring nine miles of precious beach that experienced varying degrees of erosion as a result of the hurricane Wilma, began on January 16 and is moving at a rapid-fire pace. More than 40 meters of sand (approximately 132 feet) have already been pumped back into Cancun's crystalline shoreline.

In addition, practically all of Cancun's popular attractions, restaurants, bars and shopping centers are currently open for business. Almost all major resorts will be up and running by spring, with more than 60% of 27,822 hotel rooms available by the end of March.

The US$20.33 million beach recovery project is expected to be completed by April 30, 2006. The process, which does not interfere with beachgoers, involves a barge approximately 600 feet from the shore pumping sand onto the beaches through a pipe.
