CancerVax Wins Approval: Carlsbad-based, publicly traded CancerVax Corp. recently became what is believed to be the first U.S. biotechnology company to receive government approval for licensing an experimental drug from Cuba Cuba (ky`bə, Span. k`bä), officially Republic of Cuba, republic (2005 est. pop. .

CancerVax announced on July 15 that the U.S. Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) is an agency of the United States Department of the Treasury under the auspices of the Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence. OFAC administers and enforces economic and trade sanctions based on U.  approved the deal for three potential products.

The lead candidate, SAI-EGF, has shown promise in early trials to increase survival of patients with advanced stage non-small-cell lung cancer lung cancer, cancer that originates in the tissues of the lungs. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the United States in both men and women. Like other cancers, lung cancer occurs after repeated insults to the genetic material of the cell. . CancerVax agreed to pay $6 million during the next three years for technology access and transfer, and up to $35 million in milestone payments and potential royalties on products.
