Cancer gas kills 200 a yr.


UP to 200 people in Ireland die every year from lung cancer lung cancer, cancer that originates in the tissues of the lungs. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the United States in both men and women. Like other cancers, lung cancer occurs after repeated insults to the genetic material of the cell.  caused by deadly radon gas, it was revealed yesterday.

Nearly an eighth of lung cancer deaths here are caused by exposure to the gas which is found naturally in granite granite, coarse-grained igneous rock of even texture and light color, composed chiefly of quartz and feldspars. It usually contains small quantities of mica or hornblende, and minor accessory minerals may be present.  rocks and soil.

But the World Health Organisation warned that figure is more than double the global average.

Dr Hajo Zeeb said: "This is clearly at the upper end of the scale and reflects the high radon levels found in Irish homes."

The Mournes in Co Down is one of the biggest granite sources here and has been named in the past as a high-risk area.
