Researchers found Aromasin could reduce the risk of post-menopausal women dying by 17 per cent compared with standard therapy - saving up to 1,000 lives per year.

Professor John Toy of Cancer Research UK, which did the research, said: "This is encouraging but we must follow the health of the women in the trial to secure long-term conclusions."

The study looked at 2,352 patients who switched to Aromasin after two to three years of standard treatment, compared with a group of 2,372 women who were treated with the drug tamoxifen tamoxifen (təmŏk`sĭfĕn'), synthetic hormone used in the treatment of breast cancer. Introduced in 1978, tamoxifen is used to prevent recurrences of cancer in women who have already undergone surgery to remove their tumors. .

Aromasin works by preventing production of oestrogen which fuels breast cancer in about two thirds of postmenopausal cases.
