Cancer battler an inspiration; AWARDS: Keith helps other victims after fighting back from brink.

THE PRIDE of Coventry and Warwickshire Awards has always recognised those special people who put others before themselves.

But one of last year's winners did so in the face of terrible adversity - after being diagnosed with prostate cancer prostate cancer, cancer originating in the prostate gland. Prostate cancer is the leading malignancy in men in the United States and is second only to lung cancer as a cause of cancer death in men. .

Keith Hicks was given the shocking news in 1999 and doctors treating him were convinced he was going to die.

But the determined 64-yearold fought back and after struggling back to health he dedicated all his spare time to helping other men facing the same battle.

Keith, of Binley, in Coventry, worked alongside medical staff to organise two clinics for men to be tested for prostate problems and is now chairman of the Prostate Can-cer Support Association of Central England.

He said: "I just want to educate men - it could save their lives. If I just save one man, it will be worth it."

Keith even gives out his mobile phone number for anyone who just needs to talk and will give his time and advice day or night.

The previous year he had been treated for cancer of the oesophagus oe·soph·a·gus

, but even when he was on the hospital ward he was still giving out leaflets on prostate cancer and reassuring others.

Tim Kiy, communications director for Barclays Money Skills, who are sponsoring this year's new award of Volunteer Hero, said it was important to recognise people like Keith, who serve the community.

He said: "A lot of people put their time and effort into the community for the good of others. As individuals they deserve this kind of recognition, and then they also act as role models.

"We are delighted to take part. As a major employer in the city a large part of our role is to help people plan how to budget."

The organisers are looking for nominations for this year's awards.
