Canal canoeist provides the winning move in regeneration art contest.

ARCHITECTS firm Duggan Morris has been chosen as the winner of the Sefton Waterworks competition.

They will now build a spectacular moveable structure on the Leeds-Liverpool Canal, as part of the Art for Places initiative.

Their design of a canoeist's profile in full motion, which opens out with jetties, beat entries from across Europe.

Once built, it will provide leisure facilities for the community as well as being a landmark piece of public art.

Architect Joe Morris said: "We're absolutely astonished and delighted to win.

"We believe our design will complement the regeneration already taking place in the area."

Art for Places is aimed at helping communities reshape their neighbourhoods through public art.

The project, a partnership between NewHeartlands, Liverpool Biennial The Liverpool Biennial is the UK's largest international festival of contemporary art.
