LUXEMBOURG -- SES ASTRA SES Astra SA, is a corporate subsidiary of SES, based in Betzdorf, in eastern Luxembourg, that owns and operates the Astra series of geostationary satellites, which transmit approximately 1100 analogue and digital television and radio channels via 176 transponders to 91 , an SES company (Paris:SESG SESG Systems Engineering Steering Group

) (LuxX:SESG), today announced that it has signed a long term contract extension for one transponder A receiver/transmitter on a communications satellite. It receives a microwave signal from earth (uplink), amplifies it and retransmits it back to earth at a different frequency (downlink). A satellite has several transponders.  with the Dutch satellite TV provider Canal Digitaal for its digital services and the launch of new HD channels at ASTRA's orbital position 23.5 degrees East. Canal Digitaal thus increases its already large HDTV (High Definition TV) A set of digital television (DTV) standards that offer the highest resolution and sharpest picture. Although some HDTV sets are available in standard (rather square) screen sizes, the overwhelming majority of sets are wide screen, which eliminates  offering for the Dutch and Flemish Direct-to-Home (DTH (Direct-To-Home) Typically refers to satellite TV broadcasting directly to a dish antenna on the roof of a house.  Satellite System providing services to over 900,000 DTH subscribers in the Dutch and Flemish market: four transponders on 19.2 degrees East and two transponders on 23.5 degrees East, which are being used for the existing and future HD channels.

Since the introduction of 23.5 degrees East in 2007 as a new DTH position for the Benelux market, almost 50 percent of DTH households in the Netherlands and Belgium are able to receive services via 23.5 degrees East in combination with the existing 19.2 degrees East position. For this purpose, a so-called ASTRA Duo LNB LNB Low Noise Block

was developed, allowing the reception from both orbital positions via a single 60 cm dish.

our commitment to the Dutch and Flemish markets, while it allows us to accommodate further HDTV growth for these markets."

"We are very pleased to extend this agreement with Canal Digitaal," comments Alexander Oudendijk, Chief Commercial Officer of SES ASTRA. "It confirms that HDTV is of critical importance for TV viewers and that the 23.5 degrees East position meets the growing demand for HD services in the Dutch speaking markets."
