POP NOTES

Aside from inspiring comparisons to angsty Ani DiFranco, fellow Canadian Avril Lavigne Avril Lavigne Whibley,[1] better known by her birth name of Avril Lavigne (IPA: /æv.ɹʌl lə.vin/), (born September 27 1984) is a Canadian rock/punk-pop singer, musician and actress.  and Kim and Kelly Deal from the Breeders, Tegan and Sara have made modest waves on college radio stations in this country - and even bigger ones up north, where they've toured for the last five years.

Because the two never have worked independently, Tegan says, they don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

"Don't know the trade." A Street expression used whenever one party lacks knowledge of a trade or receives conflicting instructions from the other party.
whether the whole shared-genes thing gives them an edge.

"We write (songs) separately, but once it's brought to the Tegan and Sara table it just becomes Tegan and Sara property," Tegan said, speaking by phone from her home in Vancouver, B.C. "It works easier that way, and I think that we both are fairly aware that without each other's help, the songs are not as strong."

Now living in separate cities (Sara lives in Montreal), Tegan and Sara divide the labor between them; Sara handles creative decisions and Tegan manages the books.

In making their latest album, "If I Was You," the two sought out John Collins and Dave Carswell, the production team who steered the New Pornographers' last release.

"They were just really laid back," Tegan said. "There was more freedom and we were able to explore what we did and what we used to do. ... We got to use some of our manic-iness; they were really encouraging. They had never heard us before so they were not basing it (their work) on anything."

Released on Neil Young's Vapor Records, "If I Was You," the duo's third full-length release, is softer and more pop-oriented than their previous album, "The Business of Art." Tegan said the new record is the first one she can stand listening to.

Showing all sorts of disparate influences - including hints of bluegrass bluegrass, any species of the large and widely distributed genus Poa, chiefly range and pasture grasses of economic importance in temperate and cool regions. In general, bluegrasses are perennial with fine-leaved foliage that is bluish green in some species. , 1980s pop, folk and even a dash of reggae - the new album could offer a hint of where the duo is headed. Unlike some artists who shield their ears from other performers, Tegan and Sara seem willing to soak up their favorite songs like a sponge.

"I think we're being influenced by a lot of different stuff right now," Tegan said. "We just convinced everyone we're rock, and I'm writing folk songs right now. It's getting pretty diverse. We're all over the map.

`It's making us feel really creative. I feel like we could do anything right now."

Tegan and Sara will perform today at John Henry's, 77 W. Broadway. Jets Overhead and Dutch Flats will open the show at 8 p.m. The cover is $7.
