Canadian lumber agreement welcome news for Western Lumber producers.

Canadian lumber imports totaled 16.95 billion board feet in 1995, an all-time record. In 1990, 12.08 billion board feet was imported from Canada.

The Coalition for Fair Lumber Imports called the agreement "a significant measure of relief to a long-suffering industry." Hunt, who is a member of the coalition's executive committee, said the key value of the settlement lies in the 1.5-billion board foot reduction in future Canadian shipments.

"Fair competition is in the best interest of all in the lumber marketplace," Hunt said. "This country needs a healthy American lumber manufacturing industry as well as wood products from Canada. The agreement offers an opportunity to have both."

Western Wood Products Association represents lumber manufacturers in the 12 Western states. The association tracks industry performance and lumber-related economic trends, and provides quality control and marketing services for Western mills.
