Canadian National Recognizes Record Number of Shippers for Safe Handling of Dangerous Goods.

MONTREAL--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 15, 2000

Canadian National (TSE:CNR.) (NYSE:CNI) announced today that 98 industrial facilities have won its coveted Safe Handling Award for 1999.

The Safe Handling Awards are presented annually to CN customers who ship a minimum of 100 tank cars a year loaded with dangerous goods and meet established safety targets.

"Our acquisition of the Illinois Central has made more facilities than ever eligible for the Safe Handling Awards," stated E. Hunter Harrison, CN's executive vice-president and chief operating officer. "I'm proud to say the way our customers and employees in the United States embraced these awards resulted in 47 winners there. And we had a 25 per cent increase in Canadian recipients as well."

CN has been presenting its Safe Handling Awards since 1992, and they are now an integral part of Responsible Care(R), a continuous improvement initiative established by the Canadian Chemical Producers' Association (CCPA) and by the Chemical Manufacturers' Association(CMA) in the United States. As a partner in Responsible Care(R), CN is tailoring this initiative to all its operations in Canada and the United States. For CN, partnership in Responsible Care(R) represents a commitment to continuously improve its work practices.

Three facilities received special recognition for winning a Safe Handling Award for eight consecutive years: Amoco Canada (Elspeth, Alta.), Chevron Canada Resources Ltd. (Benbow, Alta.) and Pioneer (Dalhousie, N.B.).
