It was created in December, 1918 as a Crown corporation of the Government of Canada to nationalize several bankrupt rail systems said today it would consolidate its four revenue management centres in Toronto, in an effort to improve service to its customers. The four centres are currently located in Edmonton, Toronto, Detroit and Montreal. Toronto was selected because it has the majority of all billings and receivable activities and the highest concentration of individual customer accounts in its vicinity. This move will result in savings of $40M over five years. A total of 40 permanent positions (26 unionized and 14 non-unionized) and 93 temporary positions (51 unionized and 42 non- unionized) will be closed as a result. More specifically, 54 permanent and 18 temporary positions in Edmonton, five permanent in Detroit, and 77 permanent and 44 temporary positions in Montreal will be closed. In Toronto, 96 permanent positions are being created, but 31 temporary positions closed. Net increase in employment level in Toronto will be 65 employees. Currently, CN employs 2192 in Edmonton, 2741 in Toronto, 355 in Detroit, and 3695 in Montreal. Unionized workers will be able to exercise seniority rights or claim relocation and separation benefits as specified in their agreements. Concurrently, CN will centralize cen·tral·ize v. cen·tral·ized, cen·tral·iz·ing, cen·tral·iz·es v.tr. 1. To draw into or toward a center; consolidate. 2. its Accounts Payable activities in Montreal. Consequently, of the 16 positions now in Winnipeg, eight will be transferred to Montreal and eight will be closed.
